Tancredo de Almeida Neves (March 4th 1910 - April 21st 1985) is a Banquier and Brazilian politician born with São João LED-Rei (State of Minas Gerais). He was elected president of the federative Republic of the Brésil in 1985 but died before to have been able to occupy his station.
Graduate in right, Tancredo Neves began his political career in quality from Député in 1934 at the assembly of his municipality then was elected with legislative Minas Gerais in 1947.
Three years later, he became representative of his State near the Parliament of the deputies of Brazil. In 1953 it is named Ministre for Justice by the president Getúlio Dornelles Vargas. Firns occupied this station until Vargas commits suicide in 1954. In 1960, Neves tried its election, without success, at the post of governor of the State of Minas Gerais.
The parliamentary system was established in Brazil during the crisis created by the resignation of president Jânio da Silva Quadros the August 25th 1961. Tancredo Neves was named Prime Minister by the president João Goulart and occupied this station of September 1961 at July 1962. The crisis continued and the parliamentary system was abolished by plebiscite in January 1963. Goulart was reversed in 1964 and Neves, which was hitherto regarded as moderate, became adverse with the military regime via the Democratic movement of Brazil (MDB). He was elected senator in 1978 and governor of Minas Gerais in 1982. In 1984, it was one of the leaders of the movement " Diretas Já! " who asked for direct elections for the presidency of the République. Firns was the candidate of the opposition to succeed President João Baptista de Oliveira Figueiredo but its candidature was not approved. The January 15th 1985, Tancredo Neves was elected with the Presidency with a majority with the Congress. It became however suddenly sick a day before lending oath (March 15th, 1985). He suffered from abdominal complications and developed systemic infections. After seven operations, Tancredo Neves died the April 21st 1985. Jose Sarney succeeded to him, selected by the military junta which had just returned the capacity to the people.
The International airport Tancredo Neves of Belo Horizonte is named in its honor. Its grandson, Aécio Firns, is current (2006) the governor of the State of Minas Gerais and candidate to the presidential election of 2010.
