Tananarive , called Malagasy Antananarivo in , is the economic Capitale and policy of Madagascar and its province of Antananarivo.
The city was first of all built like a fortress towards the beginning of the 17th century by the kings Merina, who made their main home of it in the years 1790. The community developed very quickly whereas the kings merina, in particular Radama I {{er}}, had the control of the major part of the island (19th century).
The French seize the city in 1895. It becomes, later, the capital of the French Colonie of Madagascar. It will preserve its statute of capital at the time of the accession at the Indépendance of the country in 1960.
Geography
Tananarive is located in the central part of the island of Madagascar, on the slopes of a rock edge culminating with approximately: 1435 meters (approximately: 4700 feet).
The city is the economic, cultural, and administrative center of the country. It is the center of an area of growth; local industries manufacture food, products of the tobacco, textiles and goods derived from leather.
Tananarive is equipped with an international airport, Ivato; it is the seat of the Université of Tananarive since 1961, has a Musée art and of archeology as well as a astronomical Observatoire.

History
- 1610-1630 - One grants to Andrianjaka, king hova, the catch with the king vazimba, Rafandrana, highest of the 12 hills of the Imerina (1.468 meters) called “Analamanga” (the blue hill). Andrianjaka made there build a “rova” (a fortress) defended by nearly thousand men. From where its Malagasy name of Antananarivo, “the city of the thousand”.
- 1710 - Andriamasinavalona, king of Tananarive division its kingdom between its 4 sons. Division of Imerina.
- 1777 - the Mayeur French is the first European to visit Tananarive and to make of it for the first time a written account.
- 1794 - Ramboasalama, then prince of Ambohimanga, (, called Andrianampoinimerina later), seizes Tananarive to restore the unit Merina. It will reign until its death.
- 1810 - Radama Ier takes the reins of the capacity with Tananarive.
- 1817 - the Hastie sergeant, British envoy, arrive at Tananarive to obtain the abolition of the draft of the slaves.
- 1820 - Arrival of Pasteur Jones of the L.M.S. Opening of the first school with Ifidirana.
- 1832 - Arrival of the French Jean Laborde. He is regarded as the benefactor of Madagascar, because he made profit Madagascar from many innovations, in mechanics, chemistry and architecture.
- 1839-40 - Construction of the palate of the Queen (Manjakamiadana: " to reign in the sérénité").
- 1849 - on March 28th, martyrdom of the Christians. Fearing the extension of the ideology brought by Vazaha via the Christianity, the queen Ranavalona I {{Re}} launched a hunting to the Christians. Those which did not renonçaient with the Christian faith were condemned to the capital punishment.
- 1852 - Construction of the tomb of the Prime Minister, on the initiative of the queen Ranavalona Ire who were to call upon the British Cameron and with the French Jean Laborde.
- 1868 to 1880 - Contribution of Cameron to the equipment in many brick houses (supplanting timber constructions, only allowed before) of the capital.
- 1861 - the doctor, Dr. Andrew Davidson of the L.M.S., founds the first dispensary.

(the three reigns preceding marked the return of the architects and the European missionaries who, strongly inspired by the temples, churches and cathedrals of Europe, start to build religious buildings: Ambohipotsy (1863), Ambatonakanga (1864), Ampamarinana, Faravohitra, the small temple inside Rova, the catholic cathedral of Andohalo, and the cathedral Anglican the St. Lawrence d' Ambohimanoro.)
- 1895 - on September 29th sees the catch of Tananarive by the French forces ordered by the Duschesnes general.
- 1896 - the August 6th, Madagascar is declared colony French .
- 1896 - on September 16th, the arrival of the general Gallieni gives to Tananarive a new statute, that of capital of Madagascar . The city will change then: construction of new streets, creation of elementary schools, foundation of the Malagasy Academy (1902), the Medical school (1897), the Institute Pasteur (1898), Medical help (1899).
- 1947 - on March 29th, insurrection against the French colonizers in all the island. The reprisals of the colonists and the French militia was bloody, one estimates the losses on the Malagasy side at several tens of thousands; no precise figure was communicated.
- 1960 - the June 26th, declaration of the independence of Madagascar , Philibert Tsiranana is president of the Malagasy Republic, always under French protectorate.
