Tanaist

The Tánaiste ( /ˈtɑːnəʃtʲə/ ; plural Tánaistí ) is the Deputy Prime Minister for the Ireland. It is named at this station by the Taoiseach among the members of its government.

Tánaiste is currently Michael McDowell, leader of the Progressive Democrats, second party of the coalition to the capacity since 2002. New Tánaiste will be named the next June 14th, when the new Government resulting from the general elections of May 2007 is accepted by the Whetstone.

Tánaiste was in the beginning the word Irish designating the heir to the chief ( taoiseach ) or to the king ( laughed ) in the system Gaelic of the Tanistrie.

This station was created by the Irish Constitution of 1937 to replace the old function of Vice-président of the Executive council of the State Libre of Ireland.

The Deputy Prime Minister acts as Prime Minister, in the event of temporary absence of this one (at the time of an official visit abroad for example), or in waiting of a new election in the event of death or of permanent disability of Taoiseach. Tánaiste must obligatorily belong to the Dáil Éireann, and it becomes ex officio member of the Council of State.

Apart from these functions of representation, the title is primarily honorary. The Constitution does not give him any specific capacity apart from replacing Taoiseach. Within the framework of a coalition government, the load is generally allocated to the leader of the second greater party of the coalition, which is thus free to direct the ministry which it wishes. Within the framework of a controlling party only, Tánaiste is often a senior politician who holds one of the least important ministerial positions then.
