Talisker

Talisker is a Distillerie located at Carbost, on of Skye in Scotland. It is only distilling present on this island.

History

Distilling was founded in 1830 by the MacAskill brothers. After difficult beginnings because of successive bankruptcies, it is repurchased in 1925 by a grouping of assemblers Distillers Company Ltd . This new owner will break with the local tradition of triple distillation in 1928 to substitute it for most usual doubles distillation.

In 1960 following a fire which destroyed the room of the Alambic S, distilling was rebuilt by preserving some elements of traditional distillation: washbacks of wood, as well as a system of condensers located outside the buildings (one of the rare things having survived the fire).

These condensers in the shape of serpentine, immersed in timber sinking cylinders, allow a slower and more regular cooling of the alcohol vapors and play a big role in the oily character of Talisker.

Today distilling, Talisker belongs to the Diageo company and fact part of the range Classic Malts .

It has 2 wash stills and 3 spirits stills.

Talisker was one of the preferred whiskeys of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson. It was for him the queen of the drinks .

Characteristics and tasting

Talisker is famous for its average contents in Tourbe, and its character " salé" (or " épicé"). Even if the mark is generally well accepted and is sold well, its high rate in phenol and its particular taste can be diverting for the occasional amateur.

The Malt used is dug peat. Moreover, the water used for the production, runs on peat grounds what contributes to the dug peat character of this whiskey.

  • Nose: Sailor
  • Mouth: Salt, Final Peat, Algae, Iodine
  • : Long and complex
