the Tales of the vague moon after the rain ( Ugetsu monogatari or 雨月物語 in Japanese) is a film Japanese left in 1953, carried out by Kenji Mizoguchi according to the novel of Ueda Akinari.

Synopsis

Genjuro is a potter which lives in a small village of countryside, Ohmi, at the time of the Japanese Middle Ages. One day, it leaves to sell its pots at the city in company of Tobeï, one of his friends. When Genjuro returns in Ohmi, it gained much money because the war with the Shibata army raises the prices. Tobeï, as for him, engaged with Samurais, but it will return well quickly at his place, humiliated by warlike truths. Genjuro wants to increase its Productivité to earn even more money. It leaves for the city with Tobeï and the woman this one. Downtown, Genjuro falls in love with Wakasa lady, Tobeï becomes a true samurai thanks to an act of cowardice of its share, and the woman of Tobeï becomes prostitute. However, Genjuro realizes that the woman that he likes is in fact a phantom, and that its heart is handled by malfaisants spirits; it returns then to the village. Tobeï and his wife meet by chance; Tobeï gives up its trade of samurai and also returns him to the village with his wife. But the woman of Genjuro, Miyagi, died meanwhile. When this last returns in Ohmi, there remains to him only his son.

This film made known Mizoguchi in Europe by obtaining the Lion of money to the Mostra of Venice in 1953.
