Tale of fantasy
The Tale of fantasy is a work of André Caplet for Harpe and String quartet, published in 1923.
The pretext is of it the news the Mask of red death , extracted the extraordinary stories of Edgar Poe, where death is invited at the time of a ball and strikes with the twelve strokes of midnight.
Work takes again in fact a partition going back to 1909 for Symphony orchestra and grips. Death is represented by the play of the toothing-stone whose table is used, at one time, like percussion instrument. The use of this instrument, usually bucolic, in a dramatic topic is completely unusual and testifies to the control of its play by the musician who also wrote other partitions for the latter ( prayers for song, toothing-stone and quartet , entertainments , sonnets for soprano and toothing-stone …)
The part was dedicated to the harpist Micheline Kahn. Its execution requires a little less than twenty minutes.
