The
Taj Mahal (in
Hindi ताजमहल ) is located at
Âgrâ, at the edge of the river
Yamunâ in the State of the
Uttar Pradesh in
India. It is a Mausolée of white marble built by the emperor moghol
Shâh Jahân in memory of his wife
Arjumand Bânu Begam, so known under the name of
Mumtaz Mahal , which means in
Persan “the light of the palate”. She dies the
June 17th 1631 by giving rise to their fourteenth child whereas she went to the countryside. She on the spot finds a first burial in the Zainabad garden with Burhampur. Following its death which has occurred on January 31st
1666, her husband was buried near it.
Construction begins in
1632. However, it remains a polemic on the exact date of the end of work. The official chronicler of Shah Jahan, Abdul Hamid Lahori indicates that Taj Mahal is completed fine
1643 or beginning 1644. But to the main entrance an inscription indicates that construction was completed in
1648. The State of Uttar Pradesh, which officially celebrated the 350e birthday of the building in
2004, affirms as for him that work was completed in
1654. Among the 20 ' 000 people who worked on the building site, one finds master craftsmen coming from
Europe and
Central Asia. The principal architect was Usad Ahmad of
Lahore. July 7th, 2007, celebrates it monument was indicated like one of the seven new wonders of the world by a nonofficial organization and related to commercial (NewOpenWorld Foundation).

Taj Mahal is built by using materials coming from various areas of India and the remainder of the
Asia. More than 1.000
elephant S are employed to transport construction materials during the construction. The white Marbre is extracted from the
the Rajasthan, the Jaspe comes from the Panjâb, the turquoise and the
Malachite of the
Tibet, the Lapis-lazuli of the
Sri Lanka, the Corail of the
Red Sea, the
Cornaline of Perse and the
Yemen, the
onyx of the
Deccan and Perse, the Grenat S of the
Gange and the Boundelkhand, the
Agate of the
Yemen and
Jaisalmer, the Rock crystal of the
The Himalayas. In all, 28 types of fine stones or decorative
Polychrome S were used to compose the reasons of Marqueterie encrusted in the white marble.
The central dome of the tomb is surrounded by four Minaret S identical, which is inclined towards outside so that in the event of Earthquake, they collapse in the direction opposed to the tomb. With the left of the monument a Mosquée is, made red sandstone, which was built in order to sanctify the place and to provide a place of worship to the pilgrims. Right-sided, is an exact symmetrical counterpart of the mosque, known under the name of jawab (“answer”), intended to maintain the symmetry architectural but which is not employed as mosque because it is not directed towards Mecque. Lastly, in front of the monument was the charbâgh (“four gardens”) traditional Persan planted trees, and where flowers in abundance push. The British viceroy Lord Curzon replaced this garden by typically British lawns.
The complex of the Taj Mahal is registered with the world heritage UNESCO since 1983.
