Taishi (Guangdong)

Taishi is a village of the District of Panyu in the province of the Guangdong, in Popular republic of China.

The last census estimates the population at: 2075 inhabitants.

The business of the village of Taishi

The village drew the attention of activists and local and international journalists, following repression by militia organized, not-official, local protests against the corruption of the government in place.

In July 2005, 400 villagers signed a petition in sign of protest. August 31st, 2005, approximately 80 of them started an hunger strike for the same reasons.

On Friday, October 7, 2005, the correspondent of RFI Abel Segrein and the journalist of South China Morning Post Liu Xiaoyin were prevented from reaching the village, and taken by storm by a score of people.

On Saturday, October 8, 2005, a journalist of Guardian, Benjamin Woffe-Walt, and a deputy of the popular Congress of Hubei, Lu Banglie, were molestés by the militia as of their arrival in the village.
