Taishan (台山; Pinyin: Táishān) is a coastal town of the Chinese province of the Guangdong. It is a city-county placed under the jurisdiction of the city-prefecture of Jiangmen. One speaks the dialect there about Taishan of the group of Siyi of the Cantonese.
Its old name was Xinning, but to avoid confusion with other cities, like that of Xinning in the Hunan, it was renamed in 1914. However its name from now on is confused with that of the Tai Shan (泰山 tàishān ), mountain of the province of the Shandong.
It is estimated that 75% of the Chinese expatriates until the middle of the 20th century affirm to come from Taishan, and one names also this cité : “Fatherland of the Chinese of overseas”. Thus the dialect of Taishan was the principal dialect in the chinatowns of North America until in the Années 1970.

The population of the county was of: 1006990 inhabitants in 1999.
