The town of Taipei (traditional characters: 臺北市; simplified characters: 台北市; Hanyu pinyin : táibĕi shì ; Taiwanese: Tâi-pak ) is the provisional capital of the State of the island of Taiwan (for the government the true capital is Nankin: 南京; 南京 in China), State whose official name is République of China: 中華民國; 中华民国 in opposition to the popular Republic ''' ''' of China or continental China (communist): 中華人民共和國; 中华人民共和国. Taipei is more the big city of the island-State of Taiwan with: 2600543 inhabitants in 2000. Its industry is particularly modern, in particular in electronics.

Taipei has a title of special municipality directly managed by the central government. It does not form part of the Comté of Taipei, which is managed like a Taiwanese province. This characteristic is a specificity inherited the time of the Guomindang, where the authoritative government made a point of keeping the control of the population of the capital. The same system applies to Taichung and Kaohsiung.

Taipei is located in the north of the island.

the Taipei 101, built in Taipei in 2004 will have been the most building of the world until July 21st, 2007 (détrôné by the Burj Dubai).

The international destinations all are served starting from the International airport Taiwan Taoyuan while the domestic flights take off of the Aéroport of Taipei Songshan.

Taipei has since 1996 of an important network of Métro of Taipei of 77 km ways and which are in full extension. In 2006, it transported 1,1 million passengers daily.
