During the war of Winter, Taipale was located on the Ligne Mannerheim, with approximately 20 kilometers of the border with the Soviet Union. It belonged to the common of Metsäpirtti. This village became famous because of terrible engagements which took place there during the winter 1939-1940, which transfers the Finns to resist and hold the village until the end of the conflict, at the price of heavy losses on the two sides. After the Treated of Moscow of 1940, the totality of the isthmus carélien had to be evacuated in haste by the demolished Finns.
The name of Taipale evokes today still, both in Russia and in Finland, a great human tragedy, and many men fallen at the time of fierce combats.
