The course of Tagliamento
The upstream reservoir
Tagliamento takes its source to 1195 m of altitude, with the limit of the provinces of Belluno and Udine in the North-West of Forni di Sopra) close to the collar of Mauria. Its course directs initially west towards the east, parallel to the chain of the the carnic Alps, until the junction with Cracked, close to Venzone. It takes then a south-western orientation. Its first notable affluent is Liumiei which it receives out of left bank, to 26 km of the source. Starting from this point, the principal valley widens clearly and becomes less mountainous. A little upstream Villa Santina, it receives Degano, then the Goal, close to TolmezzoIn Amaro (247 m of altitude), to 56 km of the source, it receives Cracked it, its most important affluent. Then the course, abruptly directed towards south-west, widens considerably at the end of a few kilometers in the plain of Osoppo (old lake of glacial origin), of which the southern part is marked by the Ledra channel which collects the water infiltrated in the stony bed of the river. Low, Tagliamento receives out of Right Bank the Torrent Arzino, then its bed narrows clearly in the throats of Pinzano.
The middle price and lower
After the passage of Pinzano, the bed of Tagliamento, directed from now on towards the south, widens in the plain, reaching up to three kilometers broad close to Spilimbergo, by forming many ramifications. From Rivis (71 m of altitude), the bed of the river, very boxed until there, goes up little by little and is framed solids dams that it was necessary to raise with the wire of time. Then of Madrisio to the mouth, the bed forms Méandre S and narrows clearly (180 m broad).
With its outlet in the sea, it forms a delta which advances in the Adriatic and delimits in the south the lagoon of Marano.
Its catchment area extends on 2 916,86 km ² in which approximately 165.000 people live. This basin is primarily in the mountainous area of the Friuli (it is to 86,5% in the province of Udine). The mode of the river is very irregular, quasi torrential. Its medium flow is of 92 m ³ /s in Pinzano and of 70 m ³ /s with the outlet in the sea. But its maximum capacity in period of raw can be considerably higher. The historical maximum was recorded to 4000 m ³ /s in November 1966 at the time of a disastrous rising.
