Founded officially the September 12th 1698 by Pierre Large the, Taganrog was the first base of the marine of Russian war. The growth and the urban development were closely related to the history of the Russian Empire, with its secular fight for the access to the southernmost seas. At the time of the Crimean War Taganrog was besieged by the Franco-British armies, in 1854. It is in Taganrog that were drawn from the fireworks in the honor of the first victory of the Russian National marine on the Mer of Azov. Town of birth of Anton Tchekhov, Taganrog offers remarkable sites dedicated to the childhood and the youth of the writer. It is there too that was born the philosopher and historian Alexandre Koyré.
Today, Taganrog is an industrial center (aeronautical factories Beriev) and cultural important of southernmost Russia. The city has a vast network of educational establishments. Located on banks of the Sea of Azov, to approximately 70 km of Rostov-sur-le-Don, Taganrog also has a strong tourist and balneal vocation.
