Tadeusz Mazowiecki

Tadeusz Mazowiecki , born on April 8th 1927 with Płock is an author, journalist, welfare worker and politician Polish.

Biography

Christian intellectual, it was one of the principal opponents to the mode of the Popular republic of Poland (PRL) and appears of the intellectual opposition.

Lawyer and catholic militant, he is opposed as of 1955 to catholic association Pax fallen under the Marxist influence. In 1957, it animates a club of catholic intellectuals gathered around Wiez ( the Bond ), a theoretical review.

In 1961, it is elected appointed in the group of independent but in 1971 leaves it because not having more activity. At the end of the Years 1970, it lived almost without resources, sometimes obliged to beg money with journalists of passage.

During the summer 1980 it is with Gdansk to support the strikes and becomes one of the advisers of Lech Walesa, declaring “ Beaucoup then will depend on our firmness, but also on our prudence ”. It is invested in the combat of the trade union until the introduction of the state of siege on December 13rd, 1981; it is then stopped by the Communist regime and internee without judgment for one year in company of more than six thousand militants of the trade union.

First noncommunist head of government in Eastern Europe named on August 19th, 1989 and invested with one crushing majority by the Diet, thanks to a coalition between Solidarność, the country party and the democratic party (see more details).

Mazowiecki was rapporteur of UNO for ex-Yugoslavia. He is today Honorary president of the Union for Freedom (UW).
