Biographical elements
Personal history
Konwicki engages during the Second world war at the sides of Armia Krajowa, which is very badly seen by the Polish capacity after 1945. It begins the studies of Polish Modern Letters, but it does not obtain the diploma of end of studies. In the Fifties, Konwicki meets a woman who will become his wife thereafter and with which it will have two girls: it is a illustrator and painter Danuta Lenica, girl of Alfred Lenica, a recognized painter, and sister of Jan Lenica, author of cartoon films and posters.Konwicki binds to the Communist party, and its literary beginnings are marked by the desire for breaking with the past. The illusion of the new future with this political training disappears after a few years - Konwicki forever known to fill perfectly the requirements of the Party. It belonged to the generation of “Pryszczaci” (“Boutonneux”, because the character pivot of the group, Wiktor Woroszylski, had some cutaneous problems), the generation of nowhere, of which nobody claims himself. Too much young people to be able to be made goodwills on resistance, too old to follow naively.
Public presence
This “null-share” marked the work of Konwicki. Starting from 1956, it introduces into its novels the country of its childhood, Kolonia Wilenska, the neighborhoods of Vilnius. But it is not an innocent sentimentalism: it is slightly ironic, an imaginary paradise and patriotic hiding place a certain derision. In the following years, Konwicki became one of the writers headlights of the movement of opposition to the Sole party. Since Kalendarz I will klepsydra , written Konwicki, all the few years, an untrue newspaper ( łże-dziennik ), a book of the notes and gossip, where one of the main roles is held by Kot Iwan, the faithful cat of the writer.Tadeusz Konwicki is one of the only Polish artists of its time to knowing to make cinema and literature with an equal success. Precursor of the Cinema of author ( the last day of the summer , 1958), Konwicki carried out only very few films. Its works, original and visionaries, like autobiographical film So far, so close to here (1972) or On the edges of the Iso (1982), based on the novel of Czesław Miłosz, Nobel Prize of literature, give an account of the ethnic richness of Poland of formerly, where the Poles, the Jews, the Russians, the Lithuanians, the Germans lived side by side. Its last film, Lawa , are most dramatic, and give an account of an element constantly present in the spirit of Konwicki: incapacity to live with after the Shoah. In this film, which is, first of all, a setting in scene of a romantic drama most important, seems it, into the Polish history, Aïeux of Adam Mickiewicz, Konwicki introduces something of deeply disconcerting. During a monolog of the hero, known under the name of Great Improvisation , which is addressed to God and which, at the end, doubts its kindness, the realizer reveals the images of the Concentration camps Nazi. This last film of Konwicki does not have, contrary to many of its books, nothing ironic.
Konwicki lives with its public - since a few tens of years one can lunch with him with Warsaw, always per same hour and the same restaurant, which is in the cellars of its publisher, Czytelnik.
