Tables of an exposure

the tables of an exposure are a cycle of parts for Piano written by Modeste Moussorgski between June and July 1874, and orchestrated subsequently by Maurice Ravel in 1922.

They were inspired by a series of ten tables painted by Victor Hartmann, a friend of the Compositeur deceased one year before. To note that only five of the latter remain nowadays: a drawing of costume of oisillon ( Ballet of the chicks ), a portrait of two Jews ( Goldenberg and Schmuyle ), a watercolour of the Catacombs of Paris ( Catacombs ) and the plan of a monumental door ( Door of Kiev ). The various parts are preceded by a Prélude and are intersected with walks symbolizing the ambulation with the visitor between each table.

It will be noticed that it is - with One night on the mount Chauve - only instrumental work important about the author.

The execution of the whole of the parts lasts approximately forty minutes.

Orchestrations and arrangements

The first musician to arrange the work of Moussorgski for the orchestra was the type-setter and Russian leader Mikhail Tushmalov (1861-1896). However, its version (created in 1891 and probably written with the beginning of the year 1886 when he was the pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov) does not include all work: only seven of the ten tables are present, are excluded Gnome, Tileries, and Bydlo, and all the walks are omitted except the last, who is played in place of the first.

The following orchestration is due to the British type-setter Henry Wood in 1915. It eliminates it also several from the walks.

The first musician to propose an orchestration of work in his entirety was the leader and Slovenien violonist Leo Funtek, who finished his version in 1922, whereas he worked in Finland.

Maurice Ravel makes of it the Orchestration in 1922 at the request of the Leader Russo-American Serge Koussevitzky, this last carries out creation of it on October 19th of the same year. This orchestration includes/understands an important solo of horn in the last piece. It is a demonstration virtuoso of a Master of the colorism, and it proved its popularity in concert and with the disc while being the most played version, but Ravel omits the walk between the tabeaux Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuÿle and Limoges.

Leopold Stokowski directed the version of Ravel for the public of Philadelphia in November 1929; it carried out ten years after its very personal version of work (rewriting several passages). Stokowski will carry out several revisions and recorded three times its orchestration (1939, 1941 and 1965). The partition was published only in 1971.

Many of other arrangements and orchestrations were created, and the original version for piano is also frequently played and recorded. An arrangement for set of coppers was carried out by Elgar Howarth for Philip Jones Brass Together in the years 1970. There exists also an adaptation for guitar soloist by Kazuhito Yamashita.

Other versions very different from the traditional model were interpreted by progressive rock groups and whole of jazz and folk of which that of the trio of progressive rock'n'roll Emerson, Lake & Palmer in their album of 1971 Pictures At year Exhibition , as well as a version for synthetizer by Isao Tomita in 1975. Two arrangements by groups of heavy metal were carried out by the German group Mekong Delta.et Armored Saint, which uses the topic of the large door of Kiev like introduction to its " March off the Saint". In 2002, the type-setter of electronic music Amon Tobin paraphrase " Gnome" for the title " Back From Space" on the album Out from Out Where . In 2003, the type-setter and guitarist Trevor Rabin carry out an adaptation for electric guitar of " Walk, " played in the album of Yes Big Generator , which it then includes in its own album 90124.
