A artesian well is a well where the Eau spouts out spontaneously. This phenomenon was highlighted for the first time by the Moine S of the Abbaye of Lillers, in Artois in 1126, from where its name.
The artesianism occurs when the particular configuration of the Géologie of a place and its Topographie cause such a setting in Pression of the Aquifère that the piezometric line “leaves” the ground.
The diagram below corresponds to the geological structure , very simplified, of the area of Béthune - Lillers (the south is on the left, north on the right).
One sometimes wrongly indicates by “artesian well” a well drilled in a tablecloth under pressure, even if it is not spouting out but simply captive .
