TV Sport

TV Sport was the French version of the sporting Television channel paneuropéenne Screensport .

History of the chain

The network is launched to Manchester under the name of Screensport in 1984, then is acquired by the group of British television of WH Smith in 1987.

Following its diffusion on the satellite Astra 1A in 1989, the chain becomes paneuropéenne and is declined in various linguistic versions: TV Sport in France, SportKanal in Germany and Sportnet with the Netherlands.

Until 1989 and the creation of Eurosport, this chain had the monopoly on its crenel. In 1989, Screensport carries felt sorry for before the Commission of the European Communities, pleading that Eurosport, whose UER and Sky Television are shareholders, profits from advantages (via the UER) on the acquisition of sporting great events which violate the antitrust rules of law on the competition of the the Treaty of Rome. After provisions were taken so that the chains non-member of this grouping can reach these programs, the Commission granted to the UER five years a conditional exemption of the conditions of the rules of competition. Thus, the diffusion of the Olympic Games of winter of 1992 24 hours a day makes it possible Eurosport definitively to outdistance its competitor on the great events. March 15th 1993, Screensport/TV Sport and Eurosport amalgamate. Their principal shareholders share the capital then. The Groupe Canal+ recovers the amalgamated French version of TV Sport and Eurosport which takes the name of Eurosport France and the Groupe TF1 control the international version of Eurosport amalgamated with Screensport which preserves the name of Eurosport .

Capital

Screensport was held to 75% by WHSTV and 25% by ESPN. In 1991, the Group Canal+ and Havas Image take the majority of the capital of the French version TV Sport.

Diffusion

TV Sport was diffused in France on the cable and the range of satellite channels CanalSatellite.

The programs of Screensport were available by satellite in English, French, German and Dutch.

Program

TV Sport/Screensport was entirely devoted to the sport diffusing especially American football with the matches of the NFL (National League Football), of the Tennis (Tournament of Wimbledon), of the Boxe, the mechanical sports and the Billard.

Canal+ had created in 1992 on its French variation TV Sport, an emission of scores TV Score diffused each Saturday evening and animated by Frederic Chevit and three other chroniclers. After fusion with Eurosport, this emission continued one year on Eurosport France under the name of EuroScore.
