The TEAM Merzario took part has 14 tests of championship of the world of 1977 with 1980 without managing to register of point. The best qualification of Merzario is one 20th place obtained at the time of GP of Argentina 1978 by Arturo Merzario.

History

Ex-pilot Ferrari and Williams, Arturo Merzario does not come from to sign contract with an official stable with orée of the season 1976. He finally manages to take down a wheel within the semi-private stable Ovoro which engages of the March 761. The season is catastrophic within Ovoro, Merzario managing to qualify itself only with six recoveries (in bottom of grid) and receiving the flag with checkerworks only in France where it is classified 9th. Frank Williams, his ex-owner calls it with the rescue to mitigate the departure of Jacky Ickx, for Ensign. Within from now on the Walter Wolf Racing, Merzario disputes the last seven GP of the season and revives the same martyrdom as at the beginning of year: at the wheel of the FW05 it can carry out only puffing qualifications and never manages to finish only one race. The disastrous results of season 1976 definitively tarnished the reputation of pilot of Formula 1 of Merzario, in addition excel pilot in Sport-Prototypes. If it had at least succeeded in drawing the attention of a modest stable deprived in 1976, its future seems definitively stopped for the season to come.

In 1977, eager to continue its career in F1, Merzario is constrained to assemble its own stable, the TEAM Merzario. The team aligns obviously only one single-seater, in fact March 761B, modest evolution of the poor single-seater engaged by Ovoro the previous year. In 5 qualifications in championship of the world, Arturo finishes only the GP of Belgium to an anonymity 14th place. Depity by the results of its stable, it carries out even a measuring rod for Shadow at the time of the GP of Austria where it replaces Riccardo Patrese.

In 1978, Merzario decides to pass at the higher level by building its own single-seater. Of owner-pilot, he becomes originator-manufacturer-owner-pilot. He calls upon Guglielmo Bellasi, which had to create its own stable of Formula 1 (Bellasi) a few years to help it before to conceive and build Merzario A1, which wants to be very ambitious since envisaged to exploit the novel method " découverte" by Hake Chapman, the ground effect. The first wing-because of the duet Merzario-Bellasi is a failure, it too heavy and is badly finished aerodynamically what is in total contradiction with the principle even of the ground effect. A1 manages to take the departure only of 8 tests in the season and receives the flag with checkerworks only with the GP of Sweden with Anderstop, but, with 8 turns of delay on Niki Lauda, Merzario is not classified.

Arturo Merzario decides however to continue at the wheel of its own single-seaters in 1979. A1B, modest evolution of its devancière committed to four recoveries, are qualified twice and never joined the arrival. From the Grand Prix of Spain, a2 news, conceived it by Giorgio Valentini, is committed with three recoveries but never reaches the stage of the qualifications. The same will apply with A4 (conceived by Giampaolo Dallara) which misses with seven recoveries the qualifications.

In 1980, Arturo Merzario again tries to shine in F1 and develops a new single-seater, M1. The car seems finally worthy to take part in the championship but Merzario does not succeed in finalizing it before the beginning of the season. It is only at the time of the fifth handle, in Belgium, that it plans to engage but cannot finally hold the deadlines. Merzario then gives up engaging in F1, modifies its car to engage it in Formule 2 where it will never shine. It then puts a term at its career of pilot of F1 and gives up his stable. It will find later the way of the circuits, but only as pilot.
