Tîrthankara

The Thîrthankara or Thîrthakara are the Masters jaïns who were divinisés because they reached the release. 720 following the esoteric tradition, only the 24 last are venerated.

The two last are historical characters:

  • Parshvanâtha - with the VIIIe or seventh century BC - is an ascetic, member of the clan of the Licchavi, which would have founded an order including/understanding 8 communities.

  • Vardhamâna , known as the Mahâvîra , i.e. the Grand Hero is a contemporary of the Bouddha, sixth century BC traditionally of -599 with -527, same caste, kshatriya and originating in the same area. It would have taken as a starting point the teaching of Parshvanâtha to work out its doctrines. He dies in the city of Paved with the Bihar.

The statues of Thîrthankara, most of the time smaller than natural, represent them generally naked, upright or sitted on a throne, and decorate niches in the temples jaïns like those of Ranakpur or the Mont Abu. One finds however with Shravanabelagola, one of the Holy Cities jaïnes, statues monolithic of Gomateshvara, or Bahubali, the son of Rishabha, founder of the jainism, high 17 meters from which construction begins in 978 and lasts 15 years.
