Téfiline
The Téfilines תפילין (phylactères), are two boxes (or batim , houses, receptacles) out of leather containing of the pieces of parchment that the men, starting from the thirteen years age, relate on the head ( chel roch ) and to the left arm (right for the left-handeds person) ( chel yad ), for the office of the morning in week and this in accordance with the instructions of the Torah:
“That the commands that I prescribe to you today are engraved in your heart; you will inculcate them in your children, you will speak about it constantly, in your house or on a journey, by laying down you and while raising you. Attaches signs on your hand , and carries of it like a fronteau between your eyes .” (Deutéronome 6:4 - 9)
It is a Mitsva, a command, for the men Juifs to carry them each day (except Shabbat and feastdays), starting from the Bar Mitsva. One with the practice to accustom the young man to it one month before this date. At the origin, one carried Téfilines during all the day. The Torah does not describe Téfilines and does not give instructions as for their manufacture; the details were specified by the rabbis in the Talmud (Menahot, 34a-37b)
Téfilah (not to be confused with the homonymous term which means Prière) arm contains only one parchment on which a scribe wrote the four pieces of the Torah which evoke this Mitsva. Téfilah of the head contains four parchments (for each quotation), placed in four separate compartments. Two opinions exist as for the order of insertion of these four parchments: that of Rachi and that of its grandson Rabbénou Tam: their discussion is in the comments with the treaty of Mena' hot of the Talmud. The Halakhah requires to carry Téfilines de Rachi, and suggests with the more meticulous persons also carrying those of Rabbénou Tam. There exist other opinions such as Tefilin de Shimousha Rabba but the two preceding ones are the principal ones.
Here the way of putting them (no word must be marked during their installation and no time of arrrêt must be observed):
-
One takes the téfilah arm, which one poses on the internal muscle of the left arm, directed towards the heart. One recites the blessing then ending in " to pose Téfilines". It is surrounded 7 times around the arm, the first passage being only one half-turn (by making sure that the thin strap is side of black painting).
- Then, after having " coincé" the thin strap around the palm, one takes the téfilah head and one poses it, by taking care that the bottom of the case is on the hair and not on the face like directly above the eyes. The thin strap surrounds the head and sticks by a node which must be at the back and the center of the head and not on the nape of the neck (Téfilah of head rests only on cranium). One recites by putting it the blessing for the installation of Téfilines.
- One " décoince" the thin strap of the palm and only once surrounds it on the palm then one rolls up it this way around the major one: once on the lower phalange and twice on the higher phalange and one continues to roll up it around the palm.
- After the office, one withdraws in the inverse order of their installations Téfilines.
major significances
Coherence:
The man having been created with several dimensions must endeavor, permanently, to cultivate in him coherence. The basic elements which compose the man and which articulate its attitudes and intrigues are: its thought, its feelings (or emotions), and its acts. When the man wants to act, it considers a project in its thought, then this one takes form by the desire which the man feels to carry out it and, finally, the man the met in practice concretely.
According to the design of the Judaism, these three elements are indissociable, or at least aim at becoming it. In other words, which is considered must be felt then put into practice. If there is no concrete realization of its good intentions, the objective be not reached. In the same way, which should not be put into practice (due to immorality or indelicacy for example) should not be considered or contained either in its heart.
It is in the sense that Téfilines posed at the same time on the head (seat of the thought), directed towards the heart (seat of the feelings) and placed on the arm (symbol of the concrete action) are a call to the coherence of the whole of the lifeblood which composes the man.
