Târgu Mureş , also spelled Tîrgu Mureş (in Hungarian Marosvásárhely , in German Neumarkt ) is a town of Romania (149 577 hab.), located at the center of the plate of Transylvania. It is the chief town of the Judeţ de Mureş.

History

The locality is mentioned for the first written time in the registers of the the Vatican, in 1332, under the name of Novum Forum Siculorum . The existence of corporations indicates that it was already about a city: the files of the city contain a document signed by Louis of Anjou, king of Hungary, which granted new rights to the corporation of the tanners.

In 1405, the king of Hungary Sigismond of Luxembourg grants to the city the right to organize Foire S. In 1482, the king Mathias Corvin the pupil with the statute of royal city. The April 29th 1616, Gabriel Bethlen, prince of Transylvania, sign a document by which the city becomes a royal free City and changes its old name of Székelyvásárhely into Marosvásárhely .

During centuries, the city was used several times as seat with the Diète (council) of Transylvania and it is here that were elected several princes de Transylvanie.

In 1754, the Royal Table (Supreme court of Justice of Transylvania) settles in the city.

Monuments

The oldest constructions of the city are the Citadel and its church.

A good number of buildings Art nouveau were built at the beginning of the 20th century, when György Bernády was mayor of the city: current Prefecture, the Palate of the Culture, the University of Medicine.

The orthodoxe cathedral, built in the Years 1930, was largest a long time of Romania.
