Târgovişte

Târgovişte is a city of the Judeţ de Dâmboviţa, Romania, on Right Bank of the Ialomiţa. It counted 89.000 inhabitants in 2002.

History

Târgovişte becomes princely and capital residence of the principality of Valachie, probably under Mircea Old the ( Mircea concealment Batrân ), during the construction of the royal court ( Curtea Domnească ).

Johannes Schiltberger mentions the place in 1396 in its Travel souvenirs .

Vlad III Empaleur ( Vlad Ţepeş ) there builds the tower of Chindia, which is the symbol of the city today.

Michel Ier the Brave man ( Mihai Viteazul ) there demolishes the Othoman in decisive the Bataille of Târgovişte in 1597.

When Constantin Brancovan moves his capital with Bucharest, Târgovişte loses of its importance as well economic as demographic.

Târgovişte is also the place where Nicolae Ceauşescu and his wife Elena was considered and carried out in December 1989.
