System off has Down

System off has Down ( alias SOAD or System ) is a group of Nu metal, of Los Angeles. The group then turned to a style appreciably different from its preceding albums starting from the album Mezmerize . Its four members are of origin Arménie nne, though born with the Lebanon, the the United States or in Arménie.

Let us note that Serj Tankian as plays of the guitar on scene, as Daron Malakian had played the basic parts in studio on the albums Mezmerize/Hypnotize and uses per moments a Vocodeur, and that it sometimes happens at Shavo Odadjian to supplement the agreements of voice, to make certain spoken or shouted parts. He is also the realizer of the majority of their clips. In the same way, all the members take part in the composition of the words and the music, especially Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian. History of the group

System off has Down

It is into 1995 that Soil (which had not produced any album and very few concerts), the group founded by Daron Malakian, becomes System off has Down. The name is drawn from a poem of Daron: Victims off has down . As of its first album homonyme, in 1998, the group was a certain success. Their committed words quickly made them them flag-holder of great causes, in particular the recognition of the Armenian genocide. Songs as Sugar (which becomes the anthem of the group with Continuation-Pee) and Spiders leaves into individual.

Toxicity

It is in 2001, with the exit of Toxicity , that the group appears with the general public. The album is carried by the tube Aerials , of which the clip is realized by Odadjian, the bass player of the group, just as by the famous song Chop Suey! . The songs of Toxicity will be those which will be generally played on scene at the time of the concerts, in particular with Bounce , Prison Song or Forest .

Steal This Album!

Several made up pieces for Toxicity but not having been retained on the album started to circulate on Internet at the end of 2001. The group announced that the versions of the titles which circulated were not final versions and left Steal This Album! in 2002, album made up of final versions of part of the pieces in question but also of new titles. This album left simultaneously in five different editions, whose only design of the small pocket varies.

The name of the album, perceived by much like a proof of cynicism and demagogy, is in fact a reference to Steal this book! , written by Abbie Hoffman, radical leader of the movement hippie.

Mezmerize/Hypnotize

In 2005, after one period of 3 years quasi-silence, System Of has Down decides to try out a new concept: the double-album which leaves in two times. After push backbeing pushed back of more than six months, the first part, Mezmerize , finally left in May, supported by Cigaro (an extract offered to the Net surfers), and its first individual, B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Bombs). The album as for him was classified directly in first place of many charts throughout the world.

The clip of B.Y.O.B. was carried out by Jake Nava (responsible inter alia clips for Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Spice Girls).

Hypnotize , the second part, left 6 months later, on November 22nd. Its packaging particular enables him to be imbricated with the small pocket of Mezmerize, which forms a true double-album then. One also finds this will of coherence in the songs. For example, the first song of Mezmerize names Soldier side - Intro . From very a short duration, it leaves outstanding its direction until Soldier side , the last song of Hypnotize . The junction of the two small pockets enables us to include/understand the drawing (on the right on Mezmerize , on the left on Hypnotize and in the center of the two albums), which creates faces then. The faces are opposed between Mezmerize and Hypnotize . The visual union goes to the drawings on and under CD (on Mezmerize we have a eye-dial, whereas in lower part we find a cranium-dial, and it is the reverse for Hypnotize ).

One can feel in Mezmerize and Hypnotize which the role of Malakian becomes more important. He also now writes the majority of the texts, assumes the writing of the basic parts and the cheek in studio, and a good quarter of the sung parts. Malakian does not hide importance of its contribution to the albums while specifying all the same at which point the other members of the group are implied in the creative process. One can however notice the influence of Daron Malakian was already clear with this double-album at the time of the concerts: it is him which generally spoke and which drew more the attention.

The setting in pause of the group

Daron announced officially that after Ozzfest, System off has Down would separate temporarily, to return later.

Malakian says that it cannot really say the pause how long will have separately to say a few years. System off has Down generally had sessions of recording every three years since their first album in 1998, although the exits of the albums were staged: Toxicity in 2001 was followed into 2002 of Steal This Album!, and in 2005 the group left the two parts of Mezmerize/Hypnotize in six months of interval. This autumn, Malakian said that it would start to work on its next project, to Scars one Broadway, a group which it is always forming. It is also question of a film music, but nothing was still signed.

The remainder of the group also has other interests. Serj Tankian occupied with its own label, Serjical Strike, and Shavo Odadjian works on its project with the members of the Wu-Tang Clan.

Parallel projects

Simultaneously with the group, its members carry out all of the projects of their with dimensions. Serj Tankian belongs to Axis off Justice, organization militant (articulating itself around a radio program) with Tom Morello, as for him guitarist of Rage Against the Machine and of Audioslave. From this union a round of financing and an album result.

Serj Tankian also joins Arto Tuncboyaciyan in the musical adventure of Serart, disc resulting from the mixture of the kinds of the singer and the Armenian multi-instrumentalist. He also collaborated with the Deftones on the piece Mein of their album Saturday Night Wrist .

He also works with the Guitariste Buckethead in 2005 and produces the album Enter the Chicken under his label.

Serj Tankian also recorded a title with the Rita Mitsouko. It is what Catherine Ringer during an interview affirmed on France Inter. The piece will appear on the new album of the Rita Mitsouko but will not leave into individual. Indeed, the leader of the group took part in the piece " Terminal Beauty " , piece of the last album of Rita Mitsouko.

The album solo of Serj Tankian, " Elect the dead" , on October 23rd, 2007 left.

Engagements

System off has Down entered a three years silence after the exit of Steal this album! , its compilation of new pieces, without new album nor turned gross. The group however did not stop furrowing the rooms with its own festival of support for the causes which are due to him in heart, with in priority the recognition of the Armenian genocide what amongst other things resulted in the titles PLUCK and Holy Mountain . Recently Serj Tankian, was committed making maintain the recognition of the Armenian genocide to the Chambre of the Representatives of the United States. Musical genre

System off has Down uses many different instruments, among which electric guitars, electric mandolines, zithers, traditional guitars with 12 cords, or of many instruments of the the Middle East. Black Sabbath like Slayer, veterans of the heavy metal, are among their principal musical influences, but their music finds also his origins in the Jazz, the fusion, the Armenian traditional music, the traditional Rock, the Blues, and the industrial Metal.

A recurring debate among the fans of the group and the heavy metal in general is to determine its musical genre: is this Nu metal or is this more correct to qualify it heavy metal?

The partisans of the first assumption point out that System Of has Down carries out indeed only few solos of guitar and prefers to use simple fronts of guitar. Their musical structure is also typically Nu metal: verse, refrain, verse, refrain, musical bridge, refrain. The group also takes part in the Ozzfest, a festival where the groups of naked metal are numerous to play. One can notice that the group uses phrased “the Rap” in several their songs, which is frequent, but not systematic, in naked metal.

The group is often labelled naked metal, as well by the fans and the media and this since the group exists. Recoveries

The song Feel Good is not a title of System Of has Down but makes of them to a song of the group (hed) EP on the album Broke with the collaboration of Serj Tankian and Morgan (the singer of Kittie).
