A system of search for information (SRI) is a software unit ensuring the whole of the functions necessary to the Recherche of information.

Elements of a SRI

The Search engine is in the middle of such a system but it is only one component. One finds in particular:

  • of the functions of acquisition of documents or notes,
  • of the modules of editions,
  • of the functions of import and export of information,
  • of the modules of management of vocabularies, Plane of classification or Thesaurus.

Examples of SRI

Many SRI are rather specialized in documentation. One then speaks about information retrieval system , for example:

  • 1965 : BOLD (On-line Bibliographic Display) by SDC, American Company,

  • 1969: ORBIT (One line Retrieval Bibliographic Timeshared Information), always by SDC,
  • 1970: Mistral, French origin by the international Company for data processing CII.
  • 1972: Stairs, (STorage And Information Retrieval System) on machine IBM 360.
