System Shock 2

System Shock 2 is the continuation of System Shock , left in 1999 on PC. It takes again the same formula as its predecessor with knowing a skilful mixture of roleplay and FPS.

Synopsis

42 years after the events of System Shock , the world somewhat changed and the enormous consortium TriOptimum largely lost of its influence and its capacity vis-a-vis a military junta, the ONE (United Nations Nominate). A technology making it possible to go more quickly than the light was discovered. A vessel, the Von Braun was built for this purpose by the TriOptimum . In 2114, a forwarding is about to be launched under the heavy monitoring of the ONE and a military vessel literally attached to Von Braun, Rickenbacker. The player incarnates a soldier of the ONE during this forwarding. Several months after the departure of forwarding and whereas the tensions between military and civil crews grow, a distress call is perceived coming from an uninhabited planet. The player awakes one week after the forwarding of recognition to realize that it was operated to him to have military implants, that it lost his memory and worse, that the Von Braun seems to have undergone very serious problems since the only survivor and human precisely seems to be the player.

Gameplay

As opposed to what its sight with the first person armed could let believe, the play is very far from being vulgar a first person shooter (FPS) traditional with the first nobody. The player can basiquement follow three ways: the traditional soldier knowing to handle force heavy weapons and energy, the psionique one using its supernatural capacities to attack its enemies and to reinforce its natural capacities and the pirate employing his talents for hacker computers, to open the locks and to turn over the various traps of the vessel against its enemies. The play is in addition rather difficult because it is not a moment without one feeling always a little just in ammunition, cases of care and other objects various and essential, when it is not place in the inventory or of points of life. System Shock has a gameplay which precedes Deus Ex since there exist often several ways of arriving to its ends (according to the orientation of the character). Its side roleplay when with him is underlined by the accumulation of points of experiments being used to improve the various capacities of its character (and with complete freedom even with the contempt of the “class” chosen at the beginning of the play). The “searches” or rather the objectives are given via text messages of various correspondents throughout the play and make progress the intrigue while the background is packed by many recordings, emails and other traces of the daily life on board vessel then dramatic events having struck it before the arrival of the player.

Technique

System Shock 2 takes again a version improved of the engine of Dark Project . The play is thus able to go until in 1024*768 in 16 bits and the car of course party of the charts 3D. Graphics are from now on a little obsolete, to note that the play can be “improved” graphically by using software rubber patches developed by a community of player. Those can be found here: and there. The sound side is on the other hand excellent. In fact the rare musics will hold the attention, but rather the multiple sound effects which can return the atmosphere choking even seriously worrying. The player will especially learn how to fear the noises emitted by the spiders of System Shock . Generally, the sound effects are enough to make the play alarming without needing an engine of play managing the shades with the Doom 3 .
