Syrmy (district)

The district of Syrmie or district of Srem , in Serb Cyrillic Сремскиокруг, is a district of the North-West of the Serbia. It is located in the area of Syrmie, in the autonomous province of Voïvodine. The administrative center is the town of Sremska Mitrovica. In 2002, it counted 335.901 inhabitants, including 84,51% the Serb ones.

The monasteries of the mountain of Fruška Gora constitute the largest cultural treasure of this area. The Monastère of Grgeteg goes up with 1471 and that of Jazak to 1522.

The Monastère of Krušedol shelters paintings among most beautiful of Voïvodine. It was founded in 1514 by the orthodoxe bishop Maksim Branković and its Angelina mother.

The Monastère of Novo Hopovo is famous for its frescos and the architecture of its church. The date of its foundation remains unknown. It was rebuilt in 1765.

On the economic plan, Sremska Mitrovica is known for the factory " Matroz" (cellulose and paper), for the factory of piece of furniture " 1 novembar" and for the " Wood of Serbie".
