The syrah (or shiraz ) is a Cépage red characteristic of the septentrional part of the Côtes of the Rhone. It is the only type of vine authorized for the red wines of name Cornas. It can be associated with the Marsanne and the Roussanne in names Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, and with the Viognier in the red wines of name Roast Côte (according to the decree of December 21st, 1966, “the proportion of Syrah must constitute at least 80% of the weight of the grapes put at the tank to produce the wine being entitled to the appellation contr4ol3ee Roast Côte”). It is also used as ameliorative type of vine in the southernmost Côtes of the Rhone, in Languedoc and Provence.
One supposed an Eastern origin to him, coming from the city Iran ienne of Chiraz. However recent genetic research made it possible to identify with certainty that the syrah comes from the septentrional part of the Coasts of the Rhone and that it is a natural crossing of Dureza X Mondeuse Blanche.
Apart from its area of predilection, this type of vine was neglected a long time, because of its poor yield and of its lack of resistance to certain diseases. Today it is not any more the case, and the syrah extended to the unit from the valley from the the Rhone, then with the Provence, the Languedoc-Roussillon and South-west, replacing in particular the Carignan with the wrongfully degraded reputation. Nearly 350 km ² are currently planted in France (of which more half in Languedoc-Roussillon), and one cultivates also the syrah in Australia, in South Africa, with the Mexico, in California, Suisse and in various other countries.
The syrah gives a wine of guard, very coloured, with the flavors of red small fruits, with a perfume characteristic of Violette.
