Syphax
Syphax (? - 202 before JC) (in Tifinagh: ) was a king of the Western Numidie, whose capital was Siga (current Ain Témouchent in Algérie), of 213 with 202 before JC.
During the Second Punic War, it is combined initially with the Romains, being thus opposed to Gaïa, king of Numidie Eastern, and with its son Massinissa, combined with the Carthaginois.
To died of Gaïa, it annexes the territory of this one and its marriage with Sophonisbe, the girl of Hasdrubal Gisco, causes a total reversal of alliances, Massinissa passing in the camp of Rome.
Syphax is overcome and captured in 203 av. J-C by the commander Gaius Laelius thanks to Massinissa, close to Cirta (current Constantine). The Roman general Scipion the African sends it to Rome as a prisoner where he dies into 202 or 203 av. J-C. It is then his/her son Vermina who succeeds it, last king Massaesyle before the unification of Numidie by Massinissa.
