Syndrome of Stendhal
The syndrome of Stendhal is a disease Psychosomatique which causes accelerations of the cardiac rhythm, giddinesses, suffocations even of the Hallucination S at certain individuals exposed to an overload of works of Article This disturbance is rather rare and touches mainly too sensitive people. This syndrome belongs to what one can call voyage the turbid or syndromes of the traveller .
Origin
This syndrome is called thus following the French writer Stendhal which lived a similar experiment at the time of its voyage in Italy, at the stage of Florence, in 1817. He writes then:I had arrived at this point of emotion where the celestial feelings given by the impassioned Beautiful arts and feelings meet. While leaving Santa Croce, I had a palpitation, the life was exhausted at home, I walked with the fear of tomber.
Stendhal did not do anything to be secured some since sitting down on a bench of the place, he lute a poem to recover, and saw that its visions worsened with the reading of this sum of ambient culture in the places: it was enthusiast and sick at the same time of so much of profusion.
Identification
This syndrome was not described like a specific syndrome before 1979. The Italian psychiatrist Graziella Magherini, officiating at the central hospital of the city, observed and described more than 100 similar cases among the tourists of Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance. Its description appears in a book éponyme which classifies the cases of manner statistical according to their source and their sociology. In short:

the tourists coming from North America and Asia are not touched by it, it is not a question of their culture;
- the Italian national tourists are also immunized by it; they bathe in this atmosphere since their childhood;
- among the others, is touched the people living alone and having had a traditional or religious education, indifferently with the sex.
The starting factor of the crisis is generally at the time of the visit of the one of the 50 museums of the city, where the visitor is suddenly seized by the deep sense which the artist gave to his work, which transcends the images and the subject of painting; the reactions of the subjugated victims are very variable; attempts of destruction of the table or hysteria were observed. The museum attendants are with the current of this local characteristic and supervise the atypical behaviors their hosts, monitoring without excess however.

The syndrome of Jerusalem is equivalent to the Syndrome of Stendhal; with this close which it does not refer to the works of art, but with the religious direction revealed at the time of the pilgrimage in the Holy City of the Three monotheisms.
