Syndrome of Korsakoff

The syndrome of Korsakoff (or psychosis of Korsakoff ) is a complication of the Encéphalopathie of Wernicke, although to certain patients the disease passed completely unperceived.

The syndrome of Korsakoff present of the symptoms of Anterograde Amnesia severe, and retrogresses (the individual is unable to remember elements passed like assimilating the new ones) accompanied by fabulations and mistaken recognitions. From a Cognitive point of view, deteriorations particularly touch the episodical memory, the Working memory (memory explicit) and the functions executive. There is no Démence and the reasoning is preserved.

These symptoms are caused by a lesion of the Corps mamillaires and/or cores dorso-medians of the Thalamus (amnesic Syndrome diencephalic), generally due to a chronic alcoholization accompanied by a deficit in Vitamine B1 (thiamin).

One can attenuate the symptoms by injections of Thiamine, but the improvement of the symptoms can take much time.
