Synagog of the street of the Small towers
The Synagog of the Tournelles is a religious building built in 1876 in full heart of the district of the Marais to Paris.
History
This synagog was devoted to the worship of rite Ashkénaze the September 15th 1876 at the time of the festivals of the New Year's Day of Tishri.The synagog is attended by Jews originating in Alsace and Lorraine with which associate later the emigrants of Poland, Russia tsarist and the various Central European countries.
In 1958, under the control of the Finguerut chief rabbi, a delegation obtains from Mister the baron Alain de Rothschild whom the synagog is assigned to the rite Sépharade.
In function since 1948, the last rabbi Ashkénaze of the synagog was the rabbi Dr. David Feuerwerker (1912-1980).
Structure
It is in 1872 that Marcellin-Emmanuel Varcollier, raises of Baltard, architect in addition of the town hall of 18th, was designated for the construction of the Synagog.
The synagog offers an interesting example of the use of metal in the construction industry, thanks to the work completed by the forging mills and workshops of Normandy which, at that time, profit from the contest of the engineer Gustave Eiffel.
Frontage of the street of the Small towers, decorated of a stained glass in rosette, are detached from the sculptures representing the rollers of the Law with a Hebrew text in . In the center, two escutcheons of the Ville of Paris attest document of title of the synagog which belongs to the municipal public domain, because of the financial contribution brought by the city at the time of construction.
Inside, the peristyle opens on a nave of 21 meters width finished by a semicircular nave where the holy Arche is, protected by a superb double carries out of wrought iron, which shelters many Sifrei Torah laid out side by side in half-circle.
The synagog comprises two stages and the building is classified historic building by decree of the December 29th 1987.
