Synagog of Endingen
The Synagog of Endingen is a Synagog located in the commune argovienne of Endingen.
History
Until the medium of the XIXe century Lengnau and Endingen located at 4 kilometers one of the other, are the only villages in Switzerland where the Juif S have the authorization to settle.Jews start to be established in Lengnau starting from 1622 and Endingen starting from 1678. The acquisition of the ground being prohibited them, those are especially commercial , Colporteur S or traders in Bétail. In 1850 one counts 1515 Jews which live in the two villages.
As of half of the 19th century, this number quickly will decrease. They are not any more that 263 in 1920, and 1980 it has nothing any more but three Jewish families there. As of the authorization to settle in the big cities, the majority of the families left these two villages.
The first Synagog of Endingen dates from the year 1764 but it quickly appears too small. A larger synagog is thus built between 1850 and 1852. Its frontage in three parts is surmounted by a Pignon in staircase. With the top of the entry a clock is, which is extraordinary for a synagog. The reason of this clock is the absence of church with bell-tower in the village. The synagog is the single place of prayer of Endingen.
Currently it is closed and only used at the time of festivals or of Mariage S. to visit it, to address itself by advance to the Jewish community of Argovie.
