Symphony orchestra of London
The Symphony orchestra of London (in English: London Symphony Orchestra , often shortened in LSO ) is one of principal the symphony orchestras English. Since 1982, it is based with the Barbican Center , with London.
History
Founded in 1904 with statute of the independent and autonomous organization (first of the kind), it plays for the first time the June 9th of the same year, with Hans Richter at her head. The German chief directs the orchestra until in 1911 where it is then followed by Edward Elgar for one year.More close to us, its principal leaders were Pierre Monteux (1961 -64), Istvan Kertesz (1965 -68), André Previn (1968 -79), Claudio Abbado (1979 -88) and Michael Tilson-Thomas (1988 -95). Of 1995 at 2006, the orchestra is directed by Sir Colin Davis, Tilson Thomas remaining however invited main leader. Following the departure of Sir Hake (the British chief is from now on president of the orchestra), Valery Gergiev succeeded to him the principal post of head.
The Symphony orchestra of London became the first British orchestra to play on the other side of the channel while going to Paris in 1906. It was also expected that the orchestra travels on the Titanic to occur with the the United States in April 1912 but fortunately engagement was deferred to the last minute. Nevertheless, it went all the same to the United States in 1912, becoming the first British orchestra to cross the Atlantic. This tradition of voyage was not contradicted since and the orchestra continues to make rounds through cleaning it whole.
LSO often counted among its desks of winds good number of international soloists, with the image of James Galway (flute), Gervase de Peyer (clarinet), and Barry Tuckwell (horn). Like the majority of the units, the orchestra has a great capacity to vary its sound, obtaining colors very different with some leaders S such Stokowski (with which the orchestra made a series of memorable recordings), Boult, Horenstein, Solti, Previn, Szell, Abbado, Bernstein, and Barbirolli. It would still be necessary to mention the name of Karl Böhm which developed towards the end of its life a close relationship with the orchestra.
The Symphony orchestra of London is also famous for the many recordings of film musics which it carried out throughout its history. Let us quote Star Wars whose music of all the episodes was recorded by the orchestra, directed then by the type-setter John Williams (with Maurice Murphy with the trumpet solo), Which wants the skin of Roger Rabbit? , Adventurers of the lost arch , the Small Dinosaur and the valley of the wonders , Harry Potter and the room of the secrecies , Harry Potter and the goblet of fire and Superman , but also the innovator Illuminations of the American amusement park EPCOT. LSO also opened with the field of Japanese animation with the Gundam SEED Symphonic Suite in 2003 and Gundam SEED Destiny Symponic Suite in 2006. Its services also include many recordings of the pop music, most famous being the album Sgt. Pepper' S Lonely Hearts Club Band of the Beatles.
In 1966 was created in complement of LSO the symphonic Chœur of London ( London Symphony Chorus or LSC ). Composed of 200 chorus-singers amateurs, this vocal unit maintains with the orchestra a close relation, although it also occurs with other orchestras quite as important.
