History
Composition
The ninth symphony was to be a gigantic work, being the crowning of its three symphonies on the Second world war. The Septième described the invasion of the Russia by the Nazi S and the Huitième was centered on the sufferings caused by the war and the Bataille of Stalingrad. Each one of these two works made more than one hour and required an important orchestra. Contrary to the two preceding ones, the ninth did not last more than one half an hour and required only one small traditional orchestra. 7th and the 8th had been suspected of a spirit counter-revolutionary and anti-Soviet. the public thus expected an honor with Stalin for 9th. The lightness of the symphony translates a feeling of relief, a victory over militarism, the happiness of the soldiers of finally being able to return on their premises.
Creation and reception
The symphony was created after the end of the War, the November 5th 1945 with Leningrad by Evgeni Mravinski. It caused the anger of Stalin, which expected an apotheosis.
Analyzes
Allegro
Sir Neville Cardus said of this movement that it was “ probably the least symphonic music which was ever written ”. It resembles more Chamber music. The main theme, being completed on a Trille pronounced, resembles a melody more or less.
Moderato
The second movement, slow, begin with a lament from the Clarinette. A duet then a trio of clarinets follows. The cords add an ascending and dubious reason. One can imagine that this movement illustrates the terrible cost of the war .
Presto
After the short slow movement, the tempo begins again quickly. The Clarinets and the Bassons gently play a first topic taken again by the whole of the winds. After a long bearing of drinking cups, the coppers are added to the orchestra and a solo of Trompette dominates the orchestra. The refrain of the beginning is taken again twice before the largo does not start.
Largo
The only dramatic movement of the symphony, it is characterized by the Russian reason of the tubas and the Trombone S like by a dark solo of Basson.
Allegretto - Allegro
The last note of the preceding largo is shown then the Basson introduces a first sarcastic topic. One sees in this air the type-setter this making fun of militarism. After a sinister passage played by the wood and the horns, victorious walk is taken again ironically by all the orchestra.
