The Symphonie COp 50 is the fifth of the 6 Symphonie S, written by Carl Nielsen between 1920 and 1922 (either nearly seven years after its fourth symphony).

Its genesis goes back to October 1920 and its first movement is completed in March 1921. It takes again its writing only in September to finish it on January 15th 1922, that is to say a few days hardly before its creation, that of which it had the practice. The final edition comprises annotations of his/her son-in-law, endorsed thereafter by the musician.

First thus on January 24th 1922 in Copenhagen under the direction of the musician takes place.

Its form is very particular since it comprises only two movements of about equal size. This binary structure allows, according to Nielsen, a denser writing, even if its overall length is equivalent to those of its others Symphonie S. It shares the characteristic with its symphony n° 1 not to have not a title. Its style evolves to a more important use of dissonances, with a broad use of the percussions, especially in the first movement.

Its execution takes approximately a little more than one half an hour.
