Symphony n° 5 of Jean Sibelius

The symphony n° 5 in major E flat COp 82 of Jean Sibelius was written by the type-setter in 1914.

It was altered twice in 1916 then in 1919. First on December 8th 1915 during a concert given for the fiftieth birthday of the type-setter took place. The partition was written by it at the same time as were outlined the last sixth and symphonies.

In its first version, the partition included/understood four movements. There exists only little of documents on the intermediate version. It is in 1916 that the first two movements are amalgamated. The war of Finnish independence stops the creative process which is taken again only semi 1918. This last version is created on November 24th 1919 under the direction of the type-setter. The musician then works over again primarily the first and the last movement.

This symphony, appeared during one particularly disturbed historical period, however expresses a certain optimism in front of a wild nature, as attests it several passages of its diary.

It includes/understands in its last version, three movements and lasts approximately thirty minutes. The first, comprising four parts, is almost a symphony in itself, this solution having been evoked by the type-setter himself.

  • Tempo molto moderato - Largamente - Allegro moderato - Presto

  • Andante mosso, quasi allegretto
  • Allegro molto - Misterioso - a pochettino largamente - Largamente assai.
