Symphony n° 3 of Robert Schumann

This Symphonie was composed by Robert Schumann in December 1850, and is contemporary of sound concerto for violoncello . It is in major E flat and carries the number of opus 97, and is called Rhenish .

Pushed by Clara Schumann, Schumann started to compose for the orchestra starting from 1841 and completed inter alia two symphonies, but left other unfinished parts. In 1850, it took the direction of the orchestra of Düsseldorf. The title “Rhenish” refers to the river which runs in this city. Its career of leader was in addition hardly outstanding, and it sank two years later in the depression.

It is in fact chronologically its last symphony, the fourth having been begun as of 1841.

The first took place on February 6th 1851 under the direction of the type-setter with Düsseldorf.

Its structure is unusual, including/understanding 5 movements with two slow movements. It lasts a little more than one half an hour. The first movement is sharp, contrary to the other symphonies of the type-setter. The fourth movement, a funeral andante maestoso built on only one solemn topic, was inspired by the cathedral of Cologne.

The orchestration requires two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, drinking cups and cords.
