Symphony n° 3 of Berwald

The Symphony n° 3 in major C , subtitled Sinfonie singular , is the third and penultimate Symphonie of the Compositeur Swedish Franz Berwald, regarded as most successful. Even if she were written in 1845, she were created only in 1905, that is to say nearly forty years after the death of the type-setter.

Like its second symphony, it counts only three movements:

  1. Allegro fuocoso
  2. Adagio - Scherzo: Allegro assai - Adagio
  3. Final: Presto

Allegro fuocoso

The first movement is of a fast tempo. It starts very soft with a coloured harmonic rise of the cords repeating twice then coppers return to give to work all its color.

Adagio - Scherzo: Allegro assai - Adagio

The second movement presents, in an original way, a scherzo like median part between the two adagios. A strong blow of drinking cup preceding the scherzo surprises the listener with the manner of the surprised Symphonie of Haydn.

Finale: Presto

The last movement, very fast, is written more gloomily and more extremely than the others, using the tonality of C minor.
