Symphony n° 2 of Beethoven

The Symphony n° 2 in major D , opus 36, the second of the nine Symphony S of Ludwig van Beethoven, was made up with Vienna in 1802.

It probably is played of its symphonies (with its eighth).

It is dedicated to the prince Carl von Lichnowsky, patron of the type-setter. Its manuscript was lost. It was made up whereas the deafness of the musician was declared, outcome with a handing-over in major question of its art and with a perceptible depression in the Testament of Heiligenstadt. Curiously, the listening of work hardly testifies to the contemporary torments of the artist.

In 1803, Beethoven did itself a transcription of this symphony for trio with piano, violin and violoncello.

Orchestration

She is written for Symphony orchestra.

Creation took place on April 5th 1803 with the Theater year der Wien, at the same time as that of sound third concerto. The reception was mitigated. She remains very traditional in her writing, which contrasts with the following symphonies. She however comprises innovative elements like the appearance of a scherzo replacing the traditional minuet mozartien, the presence of an important dynamic contrast, the connection between the various movements to make a whole of it.

Structure

It includes/understands four movements and its execution lasts a little more than one half an hour.

the analysis of work below is a compilation carried out starting from the two works quoted in sources

1 - Adagio molto - Allegro idiot brilliance

The movement begin with a long slow introduction adagio molto which affirms the tonic immediately by a Fortissimo. It is followed of una allegro idiot brilliance of sonata form. The first topic is energetic and full with spirit; the second, started in ascending octave, is martial. The development is based on the two sets of themes groups. The réexposition offers little difference out the traditional transposition tonal. The movement ends in a coded very developed comprising a harmonic walk and arpeggios gammées on the Ré tonic.

2 - Larghetto

The larghetto , of sonata form, is the movement more successful of the symphony. It has a great melody richness which one will find in the '' pastoral symphony ''. Beethoven adopts a Binary format there (talk of each topic, follow-up of a varied recovery) throughout the movement. In the development, the character is done darker with shorter reasons on an obsessing rate/rhythm. The return of the Cantabile to the réexposition is seizing. Beethoven takes again the same binary structure, but the topics are more decorated than with the exposure. The movement ends in short coded which highlights the work of the flute.

3 - Allegro

The Scherzo is full with strength and imagination with alternations of nuances piano and strong . The trio preserves the same light and merry pace.

4 - Allegro molto

The finale allegro molto is also enjoué. These the last two movements of merry mood balance the calm and serene nature of full the Larghetto . The sonata form is freer and the short recovery in the principal tonality at the beginning of the development and of coded gives him a small air of Rondeau. The first topic of the exposure starts with a short and stressed reason, whereas the second topic entrusted to the winds is very cantabile. The development is very short and rests exclusively on the first topic. It ends in a dialog animated between the violins and wood. Coded with final development is longer than the exposure. This innovation, very criticized at the time of the first, will become one of the characteristics of the style beethovénien. After the resumption of the first topic, an interlude full with softness intervenes before a brass band fortissimo does not burst. Then Beethoven reconsiders an evocation of the first reason before the conclusive agreements.

The contemporary critics accommodated the symphony with coldness finding final the " confus" , " tapageur" , even " barbare".
