History

Composition

Prokofiev started to compose its first symphony during the summer 1917. While the First World War made million deaths, Prokofiev worked its symphony with Saint-Pétersbourg. It had then, intentionally, no musical instrument at its disposal. He wanted to try to compose only of memory. “I due to recognize that the material set of themes, composed without piano, is most of the time of better quality. When I played about it later of the passages to the piano, that appeared quite strange to me first of all, but each element took its place quickly. ” It was inspired many the symphonies by Haydn of which it knew the technique very well.

Creation and reception

The creation of the “traditional” Symphonie n° 1 took place the April 21st 1918 with Pétrograd.

Analyzes

Allegro

This first movement is of traditional Structure sonata, i.e. exposure, development and recapitulation. The development appears after a marked pause.

Larghetto

The second movement is divided into three sections, of form A-B-A. Its rate/rhythm at three times connects it with the Menuet.

Gavotta: Not troppo allegro

The third movement, a Gavotte is well dancing, at four times.

Finale: Long-lived Molto

The last movement, as the majority of the last movements in the traditional one are involving and powerful. It mixes the form of the Rondo (A-B-A-C-A-D…) with the Structure sonata.
