Symphony n° 10 of Mahler

The Symphonie n° 10 in major F sharp is the last work of the type-setter Gustav Mahler. The death of the type-setter, the May 18th 1911, at 50 years, enabled him only to finish the first movement, a adagio . Before its death, Mahler would have required the destruction of the drafts. All its life, it forever spoken or played of the passages of its works before they are entirely finished.

The five movements are:

  1. Andante - Adagio
  2. Scherzo. Schnelle Vierteln
  3. Purgatorio. Allegretto moderato
  4. Scherzo. Allegro heavy. Final Nicht zu schnell

Composition

When in 1924 Alma Mahler sends the manuscript of the Dixième to the editor Viennese Paul Zsolnay, it was discovered that the symphony had been outlined complete.

The type-setter Ernst Krenek orchestrated the third movement of the symphony and the Opéra of Vienna will create the first (the only movement whose orchestration had been finished by Mahler) and third movements the October 14th 1924 under the direction of Franz Schalk.

Deryck Cooke orchestrated in its turn all the symphony, which will be interpreted on December 19th, 1960.
