According to the indications of Bruckner to its biographer August Möllerich, the first grinding had been made up of October 1863 at May 1864, i.e. before the Pemière Symphonie . However, the specialists in Bruckner doubt today strongly that this first drafting took place, and no manuscript was found by it.
Eager to make play its new work, it presents it to the leader of the Court, Otto Dessoff, which starts to read the first movement and is astonished: where is the main theme? Bruckner, always not very sure of him and extremely sensitive to criticism, is discouraged and withdraws work.
According to the musicologist Benjamin Gunnar Cohrs, the symphony is revised between October 1887 as soon as possible and April 1891 at the latest.
In 1895, one year before its death, whereas it destroyed work of youth, Bruckner comments in several places in the partition: Not valid , Only one test , To reject . On the title page, it notes: ( Cancelled ), raye it 2 - for a long time allotted, of the remainder, with another symphony - and one adds 0 . It is the last scherzo of Bruckner to be started with a fortissimo , which points out the school of Mannheim, but announces also Chostakovitch by its chromatism. It develops in a dancing and vigorous way.
The trio evokes a Ländler soft and refined . After a resumption da capo of the scherzo, the movement is concluded by one coded separate, in major D .
The first recording is that of only the Scherzo , in the Wöss edition, by Preußische Staatskapelle Berlin directed by Fritz Zaun in 1933. The first commercial and integral recording is that of Henk Spruit with the Philharmonic orchestra of the Netherlands in 1951.
