Symbol of the apostles
The Symbole of the Apostles is a Christian Profession of faith .
It is also known under the name of Credo ( I believe , its first Latin word), but this employment is abusive because the Credo indicates in theory the Symbole of Nicée-Constantinople .

History
The Symbole of the Apostles would have been dictated with the Apôtre S under the influence of the the Holy Spirit, which question the Exégèse known as critical. The author Kattenbusch recalls the origin of the creed until the time of Tertullien. The author Harnack affirms that its final form corresponded to the baptismal confession of the south of the Gaulle of the 5th century, but it as lets hear as it could have come from Rome at the 2nd century. The Concile of Thirty had accepted the origin Apostolique Credo . Rufinus defended its apostolic origin.
At the 2nd century, one mentioned confession of faith under other designations (controlled fidei, doctrina, traditio).
Ignace d' Antioche explicitly refers to the symbol in its Lettre in Tralliens.
Liturgical employment
In the catholic liturgy of the hours (the recitation of the Breviary), the symbol of the apostles was recited the every day, at the beginning of the offices of Matines and Primes. Since the edition of 2002 of the Romain Missal, it can be employed with the Mass instead of the Symbole of Nicée.
The text of the profession of faith
Curiously, the text of the third typical edition (2002) of the Romain Missal starts with " Creed in unum Deum ". It is in fact the beginning of very traditional the Symbole of Nicée-Constantinople , not the traditional text of the Symbol. It is obviously about an typographical error, and which he is not thus obligatory to respect in the liturgy (in exemption from gun 846).

To note: The alternatives of the Protestant version of the Credo are due to a preoccupation of clearness or a translation, but do not translate a divergence of doctrines. Thus, the adjective “ Catholique ” of the last article is replaced by its translation (καθολικός/katholikós meaning “general”, “universal”), not to lend to confusion with the Roman Catholic church .
