Sylvia or the Nymph of Diane is a Ballet in 3 acts and 4 tables of Louis Mérante, music of Léo Delibes, created the June 14th 1876 with the Opéra of Paris.
The June 30th 1997, John Neumeier gives a new version of the ballet to the Opéra of Paris.
History
The booklet takes as a starting point the
Aminta Tasse: the Aminta shepherd, enthusiast of Sylvia,
a nymph of Diane, beseeches the assistance of the statue of the Love. On arrival of Sylvia, it is dissimulated. The nymphs discover the imprudent mortal who them épie. In its Sylvia anger is on the point of striking it of an arrow, then diverts its ire against the god who ignited the heart of the shepherd. Aminta interposes and receives the arrow. The love, to be avenged, strips a feature with Sylvia. The nymph leans on the casualty, but occurs Orion the black hunter which removes it and carries it in its cave. Aminta launches out to the continuation of Sylvia; this one, with the assistance of the Love, manages to escape from the cave of Orion after having enivré it.
Inconsolable, Aminta trails its despair. Its steps lead it to a festival danced in the honor of Bacchus organized by a young pirate (who is not other than the Love, disguised) and attend the dance of a group of veiled prisoners, among whom Sylvia is. The pirate promises to him
that if it succeeds in recognizing it under its veil, it will belong to him. Aminta manages to identify it, but Orion occurs. Diane the slaughtering of an arrow. However she wants to also punish Sylvia, culprit to have loved a mortal. The young pirate reminds to him that she either did not always scorn the shepherds, and the goddess forgiving with Sylvia links it in Aminta.
