Sylvain Cambreling
Sylvain Cambreling (born with Amiens the July 2nd 1948) is a Leader French, whose repertory, extending from the time baroque until the music of today, includes/understands more than 70 opera S and 400 orchestral works.
Biography
Sylvain Cambreling continues his musical studies with the Conservatoire of Paris.In 1971, it is trombonist with the Symphony orchestra of Lyon and with the national Opéra of Lyon, where he becomes the assistant of the musical director between 1975 and 1981.
In 1976, Pierre Boulez engages it with the Ensemble intercontemporain in Paris like first invited chief.
Chief of opera
In 1981, Gerard Mortier appoints it musical director of the royal Théâtre of the Currency to Brussels where, ten years during, it takes part in new signed productions Luc Bondy, Patrice Chéreau, Karl-Ernst Herrmann, Peter Mussbach and Herbert Wernicke.Sylvain Cambreling is invited to the Metropolitan Opera (1985, 1989), to the Scala of Milan (1984) and to the Opéra of State of Vienna (1991).
In 1992, it directs to the Opéra of the Bastille Saint François d' Assise of Olivier Messiaen, put in scene by Peter Sellars.
It directs regularly since 1985 to the Festival of Salzburg, and takes part in this occasion with Pelléas and Mélisande of Claude Debussy with the Orchestre Philharmonia (put in scene Robert Wilson), Katia Kabanova of Janáček (put in scene Christoph Marthaler), the Damnation of Faust and Troyens of Berlioz, Cronaca de Luogo of Luciano Berio. In 2002, it directs Don Giovanni in Metropolitan Opera of New York.
Between 1993 and 1997, Sylvain Cambreling was in addition intendant and musical director of the Opéra of Frankfurt, ensuring moreover the artistic director of the season of concerts organized by the Company of the museums of the city. Wozzeck , Don Giovanni , the Marriages of Figaro (put in scene of Peter Mussbach), the tetralogy (Herbert Wernicke), Idomenée (Johannes Schütz), were as many productions which marked its artistic director in this theater. It then engages an artistic collaboration with the Swiss director Christoph Marthaler, Co-signing with him some noticed productions: Pelléas and Mélisande (1994), Luisa Miller (1996), Fidelio (1997). For the season 1993-94, it is indicated chief of the year by the German magazine Opernwelt . Two years later, it is the Opéra of Frankfurt, from which it ensures the artistic director, which is elected opera of the year.

Parallel to his activity of chief of opera, Sylvain Cambreling directs to the concert the majority of the full orchestras (Philharmonic orchestra of Vienna, Philharmonic orchestra of Berlin, Orchestre of Cleveland, Philharmonic orchestra of Los Angeles, Symphony orchestra of Cincinnati, Symphony orchestra of Montreal, Philharmonic orchestra of Oslo, Symphony orchestra of the BBC, of the NDR and of Bavarian Broadcasting, Orchestre of Paris, Staatskapelle of Dresden, Czech Philharmonic orchestra).Sylvain Cambreling is chief invited of the Klangforum of Vienna and, since the season 1999-2000, principal chief of the Symphony orchestra of the SWR of Baden-Baden.
Distinctions
Sylvain Cambreling is prize winner of the Grand Prix European of the leaders, testimony of his engagement in favor of the music of today.
