Syllabus

A syllabus (of the Latin “summary”) is a collection of questions solved by the papal authority .

History

Most famous of the syllabi , that which one generally notes of a capital letter, is that of the December 8th 1864 whose Pie IX accompanied its Encyclique Quanta Cleaned in the context of the annexation of the single vestige of the Papal States - Rome - with the remainder of the unified Italy. It enumerates there eighty proposals condemned concerning to the modern ideas of the time: Liberalism with the Socialism while passing by the Gallicanisme and the Rationalism. The last condemned formula is the following one:

“The Roman Pontiff can and must reconcile himself and compromise with progress, liberalism and modern civilization. ”

In the tread of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception proclaimed ten years earlier by same Magpie IX, the Syllabus put the thinkers of the Church in a delicate situation. This dogma having been proclaimed in an unusual way on the only authority of the pope and without the downstream of a Council, the pontifical Infaillibilité, which would be proclaimed only following the council the Vatican I of 1870, was already implied there. Did the Syllabus which seemed to take the risk of going to misinterpretation of the History thus have value of dogma? Prudence thus wanted that one limited the infallibility to the questions of Foi and of moralities being the subject of a proclamation Ex will cathedra .

The complete French title of the Syllabus is: Collection (*) containing the principal errors of our time which are noted in the consistoriales short speeches, encyclicals and other apostolic letters of Our Very Holy Father the Pie pope IX ( Syllabus complectens præciuos nostræ ætatis errores… ).
(*) or Summarized… , according to the translations.

The Pape Leon XIII will adopt a position more flexible later on than Pie IX, by advising with the catholic S French to adopt the République. Leon XIII will publish in particular celebrates it Encyclique Rerum Novarum (of the new things, 1891), which exposes the position of the Église on social matters. This Encyclique was the subject of regular updates, in particular in 1991 with Centesimus asses (centenary of Rerum Novarum).
