Syllable is a free Operating system (under LPG), multitasks and multisessions, for architecture X86 and compatible, founded at the origin on AtheOS. It is almost in conformity with the standard POSIX and has a Filing system S journalized 64 bits, AFS (Atheos File System), comparable with that of BeOS (BFS), on which it is based. Its Graphical interface is very stripped and wants to be simple to use. The tree structure of the repertories is similar to that of BeOS. The software offer still reduced is compared with other free systems, but several programs GNU were adapted. Syllable has in particular a terminal using Bash, of a navigator Web (ABrowse), of a customer of transport (Whisper), of an editor of textual files (AEdit). Syllable has many common points with BeOS and AmigaOS, in particular an environment of office direct-object, a API directed C++ or the support of the Multiprocesseur.
There exists a version LiveCD which makes it possible to test the operating system without anything to install on the Hard drive.
Following one long period of inactivity of the AtheOS project whose last version went back in October 2001, Rick Caudill, Henrik Isaksson and Kristian Van Der Vliet decided to create in July 2002 the project Syllable , adopted by the whole of the old community AtheOS.
Translation in various languages, whose French, is in hand.
