Syktyvkar

Syktyvkar is a town of Russia, capital of the République of Komis, in the west of the the Ural. It counts 228  928 inhabitants in 2005.

The city is built on left bank of the Vytchegda, in the delta of the Sysola under the name of Oust-Sysolsk (what means mouth of Sysola in Komi). Komis which lives the area name in komi Syktyv the Sysola river.

The Russians build a parish in 1586.

The empress Catherine II gives the statute of city to Syktyvkar in 1780.

The city becomes the capital of administrative division. In 1930, for the 150e birthday of its statute of city, Oust-Sysolsk is renamed Syktyvkar, its name Komi (" Syktyv" is the name komi of Sysola, and " kar" mean " ville").
