Sydney Chapman (1888-1970)
Sydney Chapman (January 29th 1888 - June 19th 1970) is a astronomer and British geophysicist .
He is born with Manchester and studies with the Royal Technical Institute (maintaining the Université of Salford), and at the universities of Manchester and Cambridge where he turns to mathematics.
During its professional life it specializes in Astronomie and Mathématiques. There suffers from a depression but remains productive, he becomes member of the Queen' S College. It gains the Prix Adams in 1929, the royal Médaille in 1934, the Gold medal of Royal Astronomical Society 1949 and the Médaille Copley in 1964. He resigns of Queen' S College in 1953 and travels in the world while continuing research and teaching.
Chapman works mainly on the dynamics of gases, the terrestrial magnetism and interplanetary, and the Ionosphère.
